Maybe they needed glasses?
back when I met a fella with an almost limited out stringer one night on the bank.
told me he had a stringer full of BLACK crappie ! Thought WOW , there is about zero "black" crappie in that lake and strolled over to have a look at them ....
He drags out stringer full of male white crappie and says "see there all black crappie" !
I tried to tell him he had a stringer full of white crappie boy fish and man boy howdy we about got in a scuffle over it . Got told several not so nice things , including how he been fishing there 35 years and knew the ding darn dang difference between a "black" crappie and a white crappie ....
Saw a post on Fakebook yesterday EXACTLY like it from the SAME lake yesterday ....big ole record breaking "black" crappie .....
different fellas , but the exact same verbage ....
below are some "blackened" up white crappie , they ARE NOT BLACK crappie ....

right on top in the mix was a well under the legal minimum size striper ....just WOW !
pretty funny unless the GM shows up and or trolls Fakebook ,,,,that one fish would cost ya close to 500 greenbacks on ice in these parts .....

I admit I'm not choosy if it's white or black. The fish warden and I had that discussion last week. Told him I had a couple of blacks, when he looked he picked out one he though was white. Both whites and blacks are legal as long as they meet the size limit. We then counted dorsal spines, turns out he was correct. He did have to google how many spines for white and black though.
This warden is actually what a consider a pretty friendly person, it's not the first time I've talked with him. Of course I'm not doing anything sketchy, so that helps with good interactions.

I try not to correct folks about anything to do with fishing- and don't even get me started about folks and snakes!
Ketchn haha
I will admit that I've "corrected" people, on various platforms & in person, that the "black" Crappie they're so proud of having caught was in fact a spawning male White Crappie. I've also interjected a question on several occasions, as to the conflicting conversation about pictured fish being a White Crappie or Black Crappie ... when the only defining trait is the markings. In a alot of those interjections, my question was ... could it be a hybrid. Biggest problem in that regard is dorsal spine count, and most of the pictured fish have the dorsal spines flattened to their backs to where a count isn't possible.
Oh, and don't even get me started on conversations about Blacknose Black Crappie !! I can't begin to tell you how many times that verbal tussle has occurred.
As has been stated, some people are appreciative of being corrected, while others consider it a personal affront.
