Coming from somebody who has had both knees, both hips, and both shoulders replaced along with two spinal fusion surgeries in less than six years, I feel I can calm some of your fears about the surgery.

The surgeries of today are light years better than even 5 years ago.

Do what you can tolerate to build up your legs, both of them, before surgery. Talk to your doctor and Physical Therapists before the surgery about your healing going forward. Try to make sure you find a PT who is skilled concerning senior joint replacements. Stay away from some muscle-head gym types. You will be in a marathon, not a sprint.

If it is an option, ask to stay at least overnight after surgery. Blood clots can kill you if not caught in time. Ask for home health to slowly get back on your feet initially and to change your bandages.

Make sure you have a walker and cane at home. A bed-side temporary rail is very helpful. Nobody will be impressed if you end up in the floor trying to show your walking prowess. Get into PT as soon as the Dr will order it.

Plan on using pain meds for a while along with stool softeners and maybe laxatives. No fun when the pain meds are passed up OR when your system slows down when taking them. I know both!

Don’t be a hero. Give your healing time. Your body will tell you if things aren’t right. Never ignore swelling, fever, or nagging pain that comes on after surgery. Get to the Dr or ER, quick!

Good luck and prayers for healing and recovery.

I just returned from my Dr's appt. on my knee. This Dr seems to think my knee pain is caused by arthritis and two bone spurs in my hip more than anything wrong with my knee. All she did was refer me for a hip injection, at what ever/ when ever that clinic sets the appt. As far as anything done for my pain, nope notta, zipola....Very, very disappointed today to say the least....
Just got more Great news from the VA. I get to wait some more time as the referal to see the specialist on my knee was just for my knee, not my hip. Now the Dr has to put in a referal for the hip for anything to be done...Reminds of an old saying from days gone by..."And the hits just keep coming...."

Yes Sir, Me too. I'm just soooo aggravated with this whole ordeal. I told the Dr's in the army, I was having problems with the knee after a fall off a 2 1/2 ton truck, and it was dismissed as a twisted knee and treated as such. Told the Va in 1992 about it filled a claim with a few other things for disability, but still it ain't fixed, and this is the first time anyone has said the pain in my knee is caused by hip???? OK Fix it, I'm tired of the pain, I'm tired of the runaround B/**** they've been feeding me...Sorry for the rant, I'm done.

My hip has aggravated my right knee so quite possibly it will help. I am awaiting a follow up on my replaced knee with my civilian provider and I see a hip specialist in the same office. I feel your frustration

Man I’m sorry they didn’t do more, it’s so frustrating when you go to appointments and feel like it’s waisted time. As someone that’s been dealing with knee pain for years I can relate to how you feel. Sometimes you gotta vent and that’s understandable. Our family will continue sending you prayers.
