Look for baitfish and you’ll most likely find the Crappie. Last outing I found the fish following baitfish in the making channel just above the thermocline. Trolled @ 1.6/1.7 mph pulling PICOs. I was fishing in Central Ohio.
Where are they and where do I look? I fish primarily Jordan lake in AL. Have been trolling crankbaits. Should I try in the main channel? Thanks

Lund, I too have had issue finding the crappie on my home lake (Barren River lake in Ky) in the summertime. One reason I’m sure is because I’m not out there as much so I’m not staying on them like I do the rest of the year. On my lake, they seem to move more to flats and creek mouths on main lake channels instead of the creek arms and channels. I went Friday, and as Buckeye said, when I found the baitfish, I found the crappie along with several more species that came over the side of my boat. BRL also has a thermocline that typically sets up somewhere around the 15 ft mark so in the 12-15 ft depth is where I found them even if the water was 18-25’ deep. Normally by this time of year I had pretty much given up on them unless I was night fishing but this year I am determined to learn that summer pattern.

Do you folks not find them on brush in summer months? That's about the ONLY place i find them...
Ketchn thanked you for this post
I’m sure I pick some up off of brush and stumps but a lot are just roaming fish. Pulling cranks or jigs, I don’t target just structure. Find the bait fish and most of the time you’ll find crappie

we hit timber ,bridges , docks and brush mostly in the parts , if you troll baits here you ketch too many "other" fish .....
they stack up on cover here really well in the summer time ...not sure about elsewhere though ?
p.s. and we find ALOT of fish in shallow water , the bait here often hangs in the warmer soupy plankton rich shorter waters ....

I'm gonna agree with ketchn, check the shallows. It's been hot up here and I couldn't believe the good quality fish I was catching in a weedy spot of only 6 feet of water last weekend (mid day even). The lake i fish is 30+ feet deep with lots of creek channels, brush, and shad - I was shocked to find them there
