Crappie definitely follow the bait, but if you can figure out what depth the crappie are holding, then concentrate on fishing that depth, it can pay big dividends. Crappie will often cruise around at that depth looking to intercept other schools of baitfish. Works for me, I hope it does for you too.

My buddy and I occasionally catch crappie on 4.5" hard jerk baits while bass fishing in the winter, usually black crappie and around some type of wood.

I look under bait schools at every depth , some of the real large fish will be well under the bait school , focus a bit under the massive fish schools , the larger fish are often under the main strike force .

I am guessing this is why the tiny fluke was recommended. My fish upchucked these all over my boat this morning. Spitting image of the fluke.

I have seen them stuffed so full there were tails hanging out of their throats, another shad in their mouth and a minnow with a hook

I see them around bait balls occasionally, but by and large, the majority of the crappie I see are on tiny little schools, or little bitty schools that have broken off from the main school of bait. The more I fish, the more I learn, and the less I thought I knew. Memorial Day it was 90F, clear and sunny. Water in the low 80's. When I stopped fishing at 1:00, I was sitting in 7FOW and fish actively chasing bait. I'd have bet money that day that fish would've been on main creek channels 15+ ft deep.
