Those are a couple of great looking kids, happy faces. I remember the changes too. I drove over the road and mostly was home every week but a couple of them had me gone weeks before home time, then they’re ready for you to go back before the time they promised is done. Some of those jobs didn’t like me much because I insisted on family time. Home every day now and the kids are pushing forty. Grandkids are either out of state or busy beyond belief. I wasn’t near that busy when I was a teen. God first, Family next, and everyone else can get in line after that. Bosses don’t like to hear that.
Grew up in a military family. Dad retired after 32 yrs in the Corps, Many a time he would be gone for a year to 18 months. Then I went in the service. I was a cook. Every other day in at 0330 and out around 1400, then in at 1100 and out around 1900. Some times when personnel office messed up you had months of 0330 till 1900. The last 3 yrs of service I was the baker for the Battalion. Those hours were 1700 to 0400 seven days a week. I got out in April of 1992, and my sleep schedule is still messed up.
Proud to have served with and supported the Units I was in: 1st IDF, 9th INF, 558th USAAG (Greece), 7th Transportation Brigade, 6th MEDSOM (Korea), III Corp, 8th IDF, 3rd Armor Div.
