You just have to know where to ask.

I learned boards from Chris James on the TN forum using the original Crappie Shark boards on Chickamauga. Rickie (rnvinc) and I went down for two days and came back with our heads full of ideas. After incorporating them into my guiding for a few years, I was approached by Nick DeShano of Off Shore Tackle to be on their pro-staff. I now use both the OR38 Mini Boards and OR12 boards with tattle flags. The OR38s are fine for longlining jigs up to pulling Pico/Bandit size cranks. The OR12s are great for cranks up to running tadpole diving weights up to size 3. Walleye guys use the OR12s for all sort of big water trolling for walleyes up to salmon.

Justin and I used them during the Crappie Master's National Championship in 2019 on Grenada to weigh in 7 crappie over 14 pounds pulling Pico INTs and custom C55s the first day of competition. 3 foot waves on Day 2 ruined our plans.

I prefer to run my poles on Millennium R400 Trolling Trees. The vertical rod presentation is much easier for me to keep up with boards and prevent line tangles. I use OR19 and OR10 front releases, depending on what baits I'm pilling. I use OR16 heavy releases with pins for the back. The OR16 prevents the board from sliding down the line. The OR10/19 releases allow us to "trip" the front release so the board drops out of formation and comes behind the boat and keeps that board with fish hooked on out of the way of other lines.

Two years ago we were on Grenada during Crankfest and killing big crappie on cranks behind the OR12 boards. We were drawing a bunch of attention as we were quickly heading toward a boat limit of 40. A guy in a boat from Alabama came close to us to check out what we were doing then shouted "We aren't going to catch any crappie until we get rid of you KY boys!" I could have taken that as fighting talk but since we already had a bunch of fish, we moved out onto the main lake in 30-40 feet of water and didn't miss a beat. We soon finished our boat limit.

Off Shore Tackle has a ton of how-to videos on their web site. If you want to learn how to use OFF Shore planer boards, you can contact me for a guide trip. Several groups do each year.

Thank you kindly for your post. I had ordered a different brand. They did not work as expected. I have 6 OR38 boards at the house ready to go Thursday morning. I need to get my depth control figured out

Finding depth control for Crappie size baits is a tough one for Walleye size baits pretty easy as I use the Trollers Bible there are phone apps out there. Some times you just have to figure it out your self. I have taken crankbaits and long lined them across sand bottoms at this speed, this depth with this much line out to touch bottom. Then keep track of the results in my note book and use that for my planer boards line out distance.

When I pulled the boards 2 weeks ago I mistakenly thought that 4 feet of line behind the board would yield a 4 foot depth of jig. I did catch 2 crappie so maybe I was above them I will work my lines down to see what I can do with them.

Get the Precision Trolling Data app. Not cheap but it will pay for itself in a season in baits you don't lose. If you want Brand X bait to troll a particular depth, go to PTD, find the bait and depth you desire. It will tell you how much line to let out. That amount of line is the amount you will have behind the board. You then let out as much line as you desire to get the board the distance away from the boat.
