    Default Winter Crappie

Maybe I'm just terrible at it, but I have been trying the trolling method at Lake Weiss now for a few weeks and we haven't caught a fish yet despite having the helix's loaded with baitfish and suspended crappie. I've been in about 20 foot of water on average and have marked fish from 7-15 feet consistently with no bites. We finally caught our first fish this Saturday trolling .8 mph as we picked up a 3 lb. striper off the back of the boat. We have tried trolling anywhere from .5 mph-1.5 mph and have nothing to show for it. We have some 1/16th roadrunners, 1/8th roadrunners, 1/16th jigs in an assortment of colors as well as 1/32 jigs. Just haven't been able to buy a bite. Not sure what we are doing wrong to have fish consistently on the depth finders and not have anything to show for it.
We figured out that trolling at around 1 mph puts our lures at about 10 foot by getting in 10 ft of water and touching the bottom but can't find out why we can't catch any fish. My dad and I have caught fish in the spring time by throwing around brush but have never caught anything trolling. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

If it were me I'd quit trolling and spider rig with jigs set up at different depths real slow when I found the fish.......once I started catching, set most of the jigs that depth.

The colder the water the slower you need to go. When water temps get in the 40s I troll .4 max. They are pretty lethargic then and will spend very little energy chasing prey.
    Tell'em I'll be there.

Try putting an egg sinker, maybe 1/4 ounce above tandem jigs. You will use about 18 inches of leader below the egg sinker. We have been using 1/4 jigs to this with and had good success chasing fish like the ones you have explained. Move slow as explained above.

Only problem with that is that the wind that day was enough to push us over .5 mph in almost any direction. Maybe a better plan is to find them and then drop anchor and basically vertical jig.

Spider rig .2 to .4 mph into the wind.....with the wind use drift socks.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

If the wind is pushing you too fast consider turning the tm head backwards and slow it down also. corny but...if you think you are going to slow....slow down. And when you catch the first crappie you need to know exactly why. Speed depth color sunny cloudy jig color jig type wind direction... everything.
