Guess I should not get rid of my little 3.3 horse Mariner I have on my 14 foot jon if you can't get them anymore. I didn't know you could not get them. I bought it last year on a small plastic boat and when I sold the boat I kept the motor for whatever reason. Guess I thought I would need it again someday for something. Well I bought this little 14 foot 36 inch wide Jon this early spring for smaller lakes and ponds and this motor is the berrys for this boat. It pushes it perfect it's water cooled and this motor looks almost brand new. Very dependable. I use this boat almost more than my big boat.
Good luck on your hunt Glowgood to bad you can't find one of these little Mariners it would be perfect for your boat.

In small out boards i wood look for a 2 cylinder two stroke engine. As i find the 2 cylinder much more reliable.
I think a 7hp would be about as high as you could go with a small 11 foot john boat/ im just guessing but you should be able to go about 15 mph which is fast for a small boateen.
It will all depend on how well your boat can handle the weight of the motor/ if u knew some one with a small outboard and if they let u try it out on your boat it would give you an idea before you go buying an outboard. Coleman makes a 6 hp four stroke outboard new for $600// they would be very light on gas and dependable [[it could be a briggs and stratton engine.

This would be a cheap outboard/ reliable and long lasting motor. it might not be a power house for speed but it should get you around good.

I bought an old 20hp merc awhile back and didn't have a bigger boat to try it out on, so I put it on my little 10' jon boat. Man, if only it would have had wings I think it would have flown. Way too much motor for it. I normally run an old 6hp Johnson on it and it works real good with just me and an icechest. With two people in the boat, it is pretty slow, but we only have about 6 inches of freeboard with that much weight in it.

Thanks everyone for all the imput and experiences! I just bought my Uncle's boat. It's a 12' Alaskan Smokercraft, 2001 model, with a matching 8hp 4 stroke Yamaha. I bought it sight unseen because it only has around 5 hours total usage, a full cover tarp, and I won't mention the price. Let's just say he threw in the boat for the cost of the motor. So around 1/2 price. I had to bolt in a hitch reciever on my truck and wire it for lights, buy the hitch and locks for it and the trailer, spare tire for the trailer, and around $66 for title transfer and tags. Have to go pick it up a couple hundred miles round trip. So we're all set to spend a bunch more on a new fish finder, pole holders, not sure what all yet. You'll all be hearing back from me real soon about getting this thing all set up. Still not sure about mounting the trolling motor yet. Probably off the transom.
I think we're gonna have a blast with this new boat! It's gonna be great to be able to get over a couple miles from the ramp without worrying about getting back without rowing!
    I have a jig with a face like this!
