Not to hijack this thread, but since it’s talking side imaging I hope it’s ok.Question- Does it matter which direction the transducer is pointing ( flat end vs tapered end ) I use a side arm mount on my kayak, hanging the transducer over at the beam.

The SI signal is sensitive to even tiny differences, for example bubbles in the water from your previous pass over an area, or another boat's bubbles. Make sure the transducer is level front to back and side to side as the boat sits in the water loaded the way you usually fish. There is a you tube video when a man took a carpenter's level and put it on the gunwale of the boat sitting in the water, then put pennies under the low end to make it level, then counted the pennies, so when it was on the trailer he could use the tongue jack to return the boat to that position out of the water, and then level the transducer to that. The other thing that could cause it is bubbles from the bottom of the boat, such as from the "runners" on an aluminum boat.
