The trouble with the trigger option it requires the reel to be able to reverse to set the position on the trigger. IMO that is enough to prevent a solid hook set

Wouldn't that require you to "let go" of the reel handle when setting the hook ??
I've used my Shimano Spirex reels for decades and never had a problem with hooksets on account of the "trigger" system not being infinite anti-reverse.
And I'm with 'triadcrappie' on the double paddle handle of the Spirex ... I wish more brands/models had it.

I stopped by Cabelas today and looked at quite a few. The Pfueger President XT, is what I'm going to purchase a few of. Man that is a smooth reel. It's model numbers PRESXTSP20X and PRESXTSP25X

When vertical fishing it wouldn't be uncommon for me to have ham sandwich in the other hand. So not so much as let go but never had a hold of it in the first place.

Yeah, in the circumstances of most vertical fishing methods ... the trigger system may not play well. But, that's not its main function, either. Heck, I've even been known to open the bail by hand on reels with a trigger system.
So, yeah ... if you "need" a instant anti-reverse system reel, then a trigger system reel is not in your best interest.
