Another great day, and another great report! Love that combo of fish....can’t do that just anywhere! I had plans to go, mainly to get out. We pulled the boat to three ramps, and couldn’t get in because of ice. I envy you!!
Had a great day on the Caney Fork. My nephew was wanting some crappie.....and I just wanted to fish.....no matter the specie. We hit the water at 8:30 a.m. and left the water at 2:30 p.m. The fish counter read 225 when we left. Most of those were 11-12 inch brook trout. My nephew took home a limit of 15 nice crappie...the majority being black nose......all being 11-13 inches. We probably had about 15 crappie that were just short.......those black nose are chunky fish but not being legal back they went. I was using the Ice Cube 6’ 9” Mebaru UL rod spooled with SOS 2# test with a section of Phantom 2# test fluorocarbon leader attached to a 1/16 ounce ball head jig with a #6 hook......with a Bison Colored Trout Magnet. My nephew had the Trout Slayer Series UL rod with the Ballo spinning reel spooled with SOS 2# test line also but was using a Midnight Blue ThunderHawk Dancer body on a 1/16 ounce Dancer jig head with a #6 hook. Water temps were 49.5 degrees. It was my kind of day....lots of action. Those Brookies are extremely aggressive and don’t give up. The majority of the Trout were caught casting. The crappie were all caught single pole trolling.....at a speed between .9-1.1 MPH.........through a spot they were holding on all day.....see sonar image. Many times trolling through we would double up. All in all a fantastic day! Life is good!

Beautiful pics! Thanks for sharing ! Congrats on another great day!
Thanks....we had a blast. The older I get the more I detest the winter. I had to get out today too, even in 15-20 MPH winds. As you know you are somewhat protected in there if it is a southerly wind....which it was.

Great report Alpha, and you make me jealous. I crossed the Caney many times but never fished it. Looks to be a wonderful fishery. Thanks for yet another great report.

Thanks for your kind words. Catching crappie out of the Caney is special. That water is gin clear and you know you have a good fish on, but when you can see it 7 feet down and even see the black stripe down the back it just makes the heart pump faster....LOL.

Great catch why can't you keep the black nose crappie. Those little Brook trout are the best eating trout. Can you keep them. Thanks for the post and pictures

Oh we kept 15 of the black nose. I was referring to the short fish....less than 10 inches.....we had to release those. In our clear waters here.....which is where most of the black nose are......they get really thick. Many say they fight better than other crappie but there is no real evidence of that.....I think that comes from the fact they get rather large in these clear water reservoirs. I fully expect in about 4 weeks to get into a bunch of 14 inch black nose. Yes you can keep the brook trout. I did not want to clean any fish today and my nephew does not eat them. You are right they are good eating....I just have to remind myself not to eat the skin....LOL.
