Fishing the 'shelf'

Excellent post. Vital information. Thanks! BTW, got any ice up yet? We're just about done for the season now with ice along most shorelines.

Ice covered the pond this morning - 21 degrees last night. But the lake's surface is affected by wind and sun mixing the surface water down a foot or so. The water is much clearer with the suspended algae dead and dying allowing the darker shallows (like shelves) to warm. As long as I can be somewhat comfortable when the wind blows less than 15 mph and not have to dress like an Eskimo, I have to fish or regret not going. Hopefully we will have more days similar to yesterday with the freak temperature of 60 degrees, even if only in the 50's.

Thanks everyone for relating to the information. I just discovered autumn shelf fishing for the first time not having a clue where fish relate to before suspending deeper. In fact I never knew that Nov. could be so productive even with water temps in the upper 30's and I'm confident Dec. will hopefully be the same !

Thanks for the post. I found fish two days ago in similar locations. The schools of bait fish and others were very large.

Good post. Makes me glad I have been fishing in 70 degree days with water temp at 64. Crappie chasing shad balls and not predictable yet in terms of structure.
