Being in law enforcement and loving to fish I always made the boat ramps along the river and lakes in my area part of my patrol. I hoped to deter theft and used it as an excuse to talk to people who were lucky enough to be fishing while I was working. Unfortunately, there were many times that even with my increased visibility that thefts still occurred.

One incident I recall, a gentleman and his wife were fishing a small 800 acre lake that's located in a very rural area of our county. They locked their truck, like anyone would do. While they were on the lake fishing, some rocket scientists broke into their truck. They shattered the door glass and tore the dash apart attempting to steal the trucks "stock" radio. They couldn't get the radio out, and managed only to steal 8 cassette tapes. Over $500.00 worth of damage for about $50.00 worth of cassette tapes.

Sometimes I wonder if it's not better just to leave my old truck unlocked. It's a shame you even have to worry about it.

When you are fortuante enough to catch someone doing this, with it being described as "petty theft" often little is done with them, and there right back out there doing it again.

A buddy of mine had been out fishing and when he loaded his boat and pulled up from the ramp, he walked around to tie his boat down and noticed his safty chains were tight. Some JA had stole the pin out of his receiver hitch. Just lucky he noticed it before he got on the highway.

Crappier Reaper I agree with your post.. Second thing in life I like doing is putting bad guy's away that have stolen from us.... When I am on the water I do take my radio or cell along with me for this reason. It's nothing better than catching one of these guy's going threw someones boat or vehicle.

"Note" A little tip I like to pass around is having your local DNR, Sheriff's Dept, and Police Dept phone numbers locked into your Cell Phones for quick recovery when needed.
