Awesome job! And who else said that black crappie don't eat crankbaits! LOL!
My job for today cancelled, which left me time to head out to one of my favorite fishing holes. I only had a half day to play as we've got company coming this weekend and the grass wasn't going to cut & weed eat itself. I got on the water at 6:30 and there wasn't much activity as I paddled around searching the deeper end of the lake. I caught a few bream where the channel sweeps in beside a point, but no crappie. Finally, some schools of shad showed up near the channel edges. The thermocline appeared to be around 12-14 feet, because there wasn't anything showing below that line on my depthfinder. My first 3 passes trolling #4 Flashy Pink Flicker Shad and a Black Chrome didn't draw the first strike. Those are usually go-to colors out there when the water's clear. I switched around to Pearl and Chrome Clown and got a few short strikes in the next 5 passes, but no hook-ups. How in the world does a crappie bite a lure with twin super sharp trebles and not get hooked? The Chihuahua and Slick Racy Mouse colors work in Spring if the water's not muddy, so it was their turn. I also tied on the Shad Rap in Black Glass on the short stern rod. It was like I flipped a switch. The crappie were thumping the Chihuahua color like they were starving for it. I boated 29 crappie, 2 junior bass, and one bass just under 3 pounds that crushed the Shad Rap. I had a few spit the hook and had a few more short strikes. The biggest crappie was 12 inches and I caught several more around 11, but no really big fish. It sure was fun and a great way to spend Thursday morning.
Whoever said that you can't pull crankbaits with a kayak by paddling just hasn't tried hard enough. I caught 3 small black nose crappie and everything else was a black crappie.
Good luck next time you go!
Jim

Creativity is just intelligence fooling around
Very good setup and plan of attack. Glad you had a good day.
How deep do those run?
I was running the #4s about 100 feet behind the boat because the crappie were close to the shad. I usually pull the #5s or #6s that same distance or farther if the fish are deeper. There aren't any snags in the deep basin of that lake, so I troll 6# line.
Here's the depth chart for the different size Flicker Shads. I hope it shows up big enough to read.
