I don't use minnows very much any more, but when I do I sometimes use a circle hook (Gamakatsu) or I use a drop shot hook. Just remember when using a circle hook do jerk, just pull against them and reel them in. I hate getting a hook down in a fishes throat and the circle pretty much eliminates that.

I use a little one (#8) for bream.

    I like them a lot!

The problem I see with circle hooks and crappie is the sensitivity of crappies and how easily they spit a bait. I think most crappies are going to throw a bait before a circle hook gets the chance to do its work. I'm willing to be proven wrong with testing and experience, but it would surprise me if especially bigger crappies didn't spit the hook before the barb caught.
Good things come to those who bait.

I have tried them. I agree with Grizz. I use the tru-turn #4 or #2. I hook most in the top lip and don't set the hook. They do it themselves.

I use Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp light wire circle hooks in #6 or #8. Often I'll use a red bead and a solid body tube jig without live bait---very effective at times. Have to let the fish basicly hook itself.

The great thing about using a ball head jig with a minnow or plastic is the hookset. They are usually hooked in the top lip where they will not rip off! Good Luck

I would have to agree with blankace, A jighead would definately hook in the top lip or roof of the mouth more than the side and I find that I am starting to use more and more Tru-Turn or cam action hooks for straight minnow rigs.
