The distance is no problem, I can see my trolling motor so I know where the front of the boat is at all times, also I set the casting rings where one of the rings is where my baits are. I also narrow my scan down, to like 100 degrees with straight forward being the center. I'm no expert at this but the 360 caught fish for me on several occasions last fall, it's a game changer for me.

Excellent information. You just described precisely how I intend to utilize the 360. With the transom mount can you deploy it from the front or do you need to deploy from the unit itself? The places I fish, this would be perfect for what I intend to do. The 3000.00+ pricetag is an ouch but there's nothing else like it out there. Did you install this yourself? I have an older 1197C with SI that I intend to use on the console so I won't need SI on the bow/360 unit. Do you use the Down Imaging feature? I really don't see a need for it. Looking at the Helix 12 G2N with just the autochart to use for the 360 to keep costs down at least a little then I can save enought to upgrade to a MinnKota iPilot type trolling motor to interface with the Helix.

When I bought my 360 I didnt want to drill holes in the transom. I used a Power-pole bracket to mount the 360 on and it works great, sets the 360 away from the any hull turbulence and closely matches my Power-pole on the other-side of the transom.

If you did not need the latest and greatest you could pick up a 1198 or 1199 for less then $1000 and use that on the bow for 360 being a taller screen it actually works better then the Helix 12 does not have the same resolution as the 12 so not as crisp picture. You can pick up the Helix 12 gen1 KVD model for $1569 delivered if Mega is not a big deal to you. That is what I did 1198 on the bow and Helix 12 Gen 1 on the console.
