I can't speak for color combo's on the walleye jigs as I've never tied any of those, just seen a few in tackle boxes at yard sales and flea markets. I know they were for walleye cuz of the stinger hook. 1 oz football heads in dark green and chartreuse bucktail cut short just behind the bend of the hook.
Most bucktails i have tied have been on banana heads of 3/4oz or more. You'll use lots of hair so plan ahead.

One thing I forgot to say and since some mentioned the Large Northern Ducktails, I would option for Southern Ducktails as the hair is more thin and not as stiff. I like it so much better! Just my 2 cents and yes I am not so found of the Large Northern ones even though I do have some, but bought before I understood the difference!

I tied up some last night for. Crappie first and the hair is kinda tough to tie down. As it slips kind easily. I used deer hair for trout flies before , but never buck tail.
I learned you have to use heavy pressure on the thread to hold it down secuy. I used Danville 3/0 thread.
On the smaller sized jigs its a little tough as the hair fibers are differant lengths and on a smaller sized jig your dealing with a much shorter piece of hair in your hand. I think the walleye bucktails will be much easier to tie.

I also tied some using grey and fox squirrel. It was much easier for me to work with on the small jigs.

I love a hair jig, my favorite is a 3/32oz with a #6 hook burnt orange head with black eyes yellow craft fur with chartreus crystal flash with a lime thread neck. It is my favorite casting jig have not tried vertical fishing with it yet.

I've had my best luck with pink/white hair jigs. Brown/orange works too, but the stinking smallmouths don't leave 'em alone!

I like summer bucktails for small jigs. Winter bucktail has the big, hollow hairs, and they are more fragile. But they make for a slow sink on a small head, so worth considering, depending on how you fish.

Believe it or not, the long, tan hairs from my German Shepherd's tail make awesome "bucktail" jigs. For some reason, she doesn't like me following her around with a pair of scissors!

I'll try to walk you through it. Gather a bunch of the tail and cut it away from the skin. Holding it in one hand, pull the longest hairs out and lay them down. Do this several times, each time keeping the tips at the same place. Once you do this a few times, pick up the hair from the tip end and cut it to the length you need off the buut end. This solves the different length problem as best as I know how.

I use hair and bucktail jigs all the time, all year long. what is getting harder to find for me is replacements. especially when it comes to the hair that is used. I'm not a picky person, i would just like a little variety. which, like i said is harder to find. Most folks seem to use a stiffer fur/hair, which to me doesn't add much movement to it in the water (and in some situations is fine). The more fluffy fur/hair moves very well and almost fluid like which I really like, but its hard to find.
