I don't know about the reverse failure, but the rest make sense. Brushed DC motors are power hogs.
I have a 55lb thrust minkota maxxum trolling motor that i use as my main motor (most lakes near me you cannot use gas, electric motors only). it works fine for short distances but when i take longer rides it begins to give me problems such as the reverse doesnt work and it does not go as fast as normal. do these motors over heat after long nonstop rides? is there anyway to help prevent/stop this?

I would buy me a Chinese brushless dc Trolling motor. 30% more efficient than brushed motors and DO NOT generate the rfi noised caused by commutation. No noise on you electronics!!!!!!!!!!! I am surprised that MK or MG has not yet ventured into the brushless realm.
My drone uses brushless motors.

You should see those mechanics minds working when brushless DC's come in the shop. Mine too when they first came out many years ago. The want me to tell them how they work, but when I say that I have a 2k word nomenclature on them, it would be better to read. They pass and continue to disassemble. Very few in electrical rotating equipment want to learn anything about what makes that rotor turn.
With any TM, always remove the prop and check for fishing line before doing anything else. Chances are that might be the source of your trouble.
