Also call the Black Nose Crappie here in Tenn. I usually always catch 1 each time I go out. Ive never seen them get real big here either. They are usually around 9in. or so. However last trip i caught one that was pushing 11 1/2in.

As you read there is a Blacknose (color variation of black Crappie) which are simply a natural color stripe on a Black Crappie. Some fish farms are crossing them with White Crappie creating hybrids for ponds.

We call them Mustangs! They are a hybrid crappie created with the black stripe gene for sportfishing and population control!

We're talking about two "different" fish, here.

If it's a Black Crappie & has a black stripe from dorsal fin to mouth ... it's a Blacknose Black Crappie, and has a naturally occurring genetic pigment marking. The Blacknose is a naturally occurring fish in lakes of several states, and has been stocked in many other lakes. It's not a hybrid, and it can & does reproduce.

If it's a White Crappie & has a black stripe from dorsal fin to mouth ... it's a Magnolia Crappie, and is a triploid hybrid fish, that has to be "grown" by DNR biologists. It's sterile & cannot reproduce, so it grows faster & larger than normal. It is stocked in only a few lakes, as far as I know.

I have caught them from nearly no coloring (just dirty white) to almost completely black, with every variation inbetween and from the same spot on the same trip.
I caught one once that looked like it was a spliced crappie (will try to find the old pic(poloroid) this thing was a black crappie in the back half and just a few specks on the front half, very weird pattern, we thought it might be sick at first, but it wasn't, so we ate it..lol

As in all of God's creatures, each one is unique, even the little fishies
