i have had decent experience with shakespeare alpha 20 UL reels.very cheap but seem to hold up good.these are the reel on the ugly stick rod n reel combos with 4'8" rods usually around 20-30 something.i have 3 of these combos.i first thought when i got the first one that the rod alone is worth the 29$ or so,and if the reel were to be a piece of junk,i still have the rod which is good.but none of the reels have broke yet.i've caught bass, and drag pullin trout on these reels even!also have a basspro shops tiny light reel which is decent, and 2 quantum reels which are flawless!

I started to buy the Tournament 25 10BB reel sold by Gander Mtn. They are still listed on their site but then I read all of the customer comments. Not one person had a good thing to say about it. I strongly recommend you go to their site and check it out for yourself before you purchase one.

Bought one of these tonite for $29.95 at Bass Pro in Branson. Looks like a nice little reel to me.

Well I got that BPS Microlite Elite reel today and I must say...It sucks!
It is very rough and reel to where the handle is in the 5-o'clock position it sticks. This thing will surely be returned. I really think they sent me one that has been sent to another person. The internal packaging seemed to have been removed/replaced. This is the first reel I bought via mail and the last, hands on before I buy from now on.

I got several panfish rigs, one is a cheap 5-1/2' Daiwa UL, has to be at least 25 yrs old and has never has any problems. Guess my favorite is an old Mitchell 308 on a 5' Eagle Claw featherlight reel, it's probably at least a 1985 combo. Also got a Shimano UL, about as old as the other two rigs, and still have had no problems with it, either. Got a 2009 Mitchell 308 combo, it's nowhere near the quality of the older models, rod broke just casting it one day, put it on an old Garcia Conlon 5-1/2' ml rod from the 1970s, not too bad of an outfit. But I bought my wife a pink Pfleuger Lady Trion light 7' combo, 2010 model, size 30 reel and I would love to have one of those (in a more masculine color LOL) she loves it. I like the Okuma spinning reels, got 3 of those, the size #30 doesn't have a baitruinner and is good for panfish-bass but the two big reels #50 and #90 do have baitrunners, of course I don't use the big boys for panfish. Also got one of the little 4'6" Ugly Stik combos w/ tiny Shakespeare reel and 4 lb test.. I take care of my rods-reels, but guess if l were gonna recommend something new it would be the Okumas, Pfleugers, haven't tried Cardinals but hear they're good and the little tiny Ugly Shakespeare is fine for throwing short casts.
