I know this thread was started quite a while back, but I have to say thanks to Shipahoy and all the other folks who pitched in. For years, I fished mostly for catfish and always used the San Diego jam knot because it was so strong and would hold a big treble hook with a mighty cat pulling against it. Well, since that was really the only knot I knew, I also used it for my crappie jigs until....... I was reading through here and realized that the knot was keeping the jig from moving like it needs to. So, I went to the loop knot about a week ago and have had, literally, 10x or more bites! Thanks to the posts in this thread, I know realize that the knot most definitely makes a huge difference in the presentation! Just wanted to say "Thanks guys!"

Coffee stirs work great for making slip bobber stops.

dang, My brain hurts! I just finished reading this entire thread and have to say, THANK YOU, to everybody for all this great information.

    Ship,
Are those snap swivels on the end or just casps?
On the doubles, how is the lower jig attached? to the snap, like adding a pre-made snell or tied on next to the main line?

Those are just hook snaps my friend. On the doubles I tie a jig with a loop knot then put a figure eight knot at the top and hang it on the hook snap with the other jig.

I also want to say Thank You.
I have been using worms with a small hook then split shot then a cork

To fish the bottom I would just take the cork off.

I never considered putting the weight on the bottom.

You know folks, you can teach an old dog new tricks. As such, this old dog has always been trying to revise his slip float rig. I finally realized that I was using too much hardware on my rig. Now it is just a float stop, float and two tiny snap swivels on my rig. The snaps allow me to change lures or colors quickly without having to retie the entire rig. Here is my rig drawing. It might help someone. The drawing shows two jigs with the heavier jig on the bottom. The photo shows using a jig and a basic #4 or #6 hook concept.

I use the double Davy knot for monofiliment, using a triple weave for flurocarbon, and a four weave for braid. The knots are small and hold very well, even on the occasional bass.

Thanks a million to all for the lessons. I will now tie loop knots from now on when crappie fishing.
