    Default Looking for LABILL!

    LABILL,

I want to get into tying my own jigs but I looked and there is so much material and tools involved that I don't know what I need to get started. Could you help me?

Hey basinfisher......Had to unplug the ol' 'puter yesterday due to lightning storms, missed your post. As to materials, you first need to find a tieing vice to hold the hook/jig, a thread bobbin of your choice, thread in colors you like your jigs in, marabou and synthetics like crystal flash in whatever color you like, super glue to secure bead eyes. If you squirrel hunt, save the tails, same with deer. Walmart craft shops have a wide selection of all manner of materials much cheaper than a fly shop, but there are some things you will have to buy in a fly shop, or even better, order from Cabelas or BPS. One of the most important items is a book for an introduction to tieing your own lures, just a means to get started. There are some basics you will need to know in getting started, a book will take care of that and it will always be on hand. Let me know how you are progressing.

Hi speed.....I'd like to see how you're doing, get a pic of the kit you mentioned also. I have a good source here in Shreveport, so I seldom check out what the major suppliers have in stock. A kit would be perfect for getting someone started, and it doesn't have to be expensive. I've been using a 6 dollar vise from wally world for 18 years, and just replaced it with a new rotary vice.

basinfisher, You may also want to check out (Barlow's) They have a lot of materials for jig tying. A good friend of mine ties his own as well as sells them, and that is where he orders a lot of his supplies. I looked at the starter kits when I was in BPS and they looked pretty good, you will also want to check into what kind of mold you want for you jig -heads, which will depend on the style jig you intend to make, and Barlows has them as well. Like you said there is so much involved in getting started, if you are going to be tying only for yourself it does get costly, that is why my friend started selling his, to help cover the cost of his materials.
