    Default Tops for Crappie

Ok, let me ask a question that I should know the answer to. Are there certain types of trees that are NOT good for tops? I know I have heard that sweet gum and willows are good but what about pecan or oak? Just asking b/c I have some limbs laying around the yard that need to be disposed of and if I can use them for habitat, I would rather do that than burn them.

I've caught plenty fish out of pecan and oak tops. I don't think pine makes a good top though. I personally don't like Christmas trees either. I'd rather have hardwood

Best tops I've fished have been oak trees that fell in the water.

If it were me, the pecan stays in reserve for the smoker. Regardless of the size, you know what I'm talking about Dwayne. Hardwoods such as oak etc. would work.

I believe hardwood is the better choice because it will last longer.

Yea Randy, I know what you are talking about but I usually have plenty in reserve for the smoker.
