    Default Homemade fish fryer......

Built it last weekend, works good. 1/16" plate steel. Harbor freight wheels. Ebay thermometer, although I'll buy a home depot bbq thermo next time. I think I'll go with 1/8" if I build another one if only due to warping of the metal and ease of welding. I'm amazed at how cool the grease is at the bottom of the cooker. While the oil at the top was 360 degrees yesterday, the oil at the bottom stayed constant at 75 degrees. I could touch the bottom and it actually felt cold. As much oil and propane as it will probably use, the oil had better last a while!!! It took about 25 minutes to get the oil to 350 degrees. Is that about how long it's taking you guys' cookers that are "factory" built? I'm hoping to catch some LOP crappie to stink the grease up tomorrow,

Looks nice BM. Isn't it great when you have the time, equipment, and skill to do home projects like that. I think you've made something to be proud of.

Looks great, go catch some fish. My cooker takes about ten minutes to get hot.

Good looking rig. Mine is a 4 gallon model from R&V. Takes about 15 min and ready to fry.

Real nice job on the cooker. Like you say you have to use a lot of cooking oil before you can fry the first fish. I use the oil fryer now. Your equipment that you made is top notch. Thanks for the picture and sharing it with us.

Very nice cooker. Im in the market for a cooker myself. Still trying to figure out what size to get. I like yours with the wheels and cart. Makes it easy to move.

Size: 51.9 KBThanks so much for all the comments. I cooked my first batch with it tonight and had a good friend and his family come over. We had a great time, ate lots of crappie, and the cooker worked great. I had to turn it as low as I could turn the burner to keep it from overheating, but it held it's temp really good. The fish came out great, and I could cook a whole bag of hush puppies and a 2 lb. bag of fries at once without it even thinking about cooling below 350.
The only negative is that it does take a whole lot of oil. But it is quick and easy to clean, and easy to filter the corn meal.
My dad and I caught some nice crappie today on LOP, although the crappie were really slow. I think we caught 17 nice crappie from 10am-3pm. It was about 12:30 until we finally found some, but when we did, they bit slow but fairly steady. All in all, it was a great day all the way around. They were some of the nicest crappie I've ever caught. Here's a pic of a couple. We had about 10 really nice slabs.
