    Default Giant Crappie

Here are the pictures that I said I was going to post a while back, but I didn't know how to post pics. This was a couple of years ago, one of my best friends landed this fish, by far the biggest I've ever personally got to lay eyes on, or better yet, NET! This was the only fish we caught that day because we were bass fishing and hadn't been there long before he tied into this thing with a bandit crank bait. Fish had it side ways in its mouth when I netted him. We obviously left right then to go weigh it. A friend of mine that works at Macs Fresh Market let me put it on an old produce scale in the back, we figured by law these have to be correct. After taking the fish on and off several times to ensure the right weight, he came in at 3.9lbs every time and measured 17 1/2 inches in length. This was the state record for LA, by the next morning the fish weighed 3.7 by the Wildlife and Fisheries, still the state record, however my buddy never sent in the paper work to have it finalized. Instead, he got a mold mount and ate some of the biggest filets he'd ever seen. This was a day I'll never forget.

    Default Record Crappie

Clark, a very big crappie but it wouldn't have been the state record. The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association is the official keeper of state fish records. Here's the list for both black and white crappie. Looks like Caney is the place to go for black crappie. If you catch a big one you can go to The Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association and get the necessary form to submit the fish for a record placement.

    (Pomoxis nigromaculatus)

That would be a typo on my part, I meant 3.9lbs not 3.09 and 3.7 weighed by the wildlife and fisheries. He said they told him that the fish being out of the water overnight could have resulted in it losing a little weight. He still has the paper work they gave him to redeem his record so it actually would have been the state record, #1 for a black crappie. Thanks for pointing that out to me. I'll try to edit the post if possible.

A 4 pounder. Wow! I've caught some over 2 pounds but to think of one almost twice that big is something else. Encourage him to turn in the paperwork. A state record would be something to be proud of. One of my old high school friends broke the largemouth bass record on Caney about 20 years ago and it still stands today.
