    Wink Lacassine Refuge

I have been doing alot of fishing in the pool lately, sad that they are closing for the season on Oct.15. Anyway, in the last six weeks, fishing one day on the weekends, we have pulled out loads of (white perch) crappie.(over 400 fish) fishing 10 to 14 ft of water, fishing 18 inches deep with jigs. I have a couple of pics from two of the trips, they dont have a great size to them, but high numbers.

    Default Wow

Your arms should be tired pulling in all them fish! :D Bet you had big time on them. Just where and what is Lacassine Refuge? I've never even heard of it. Are they draining it or something else happening with it. Thanks and good job.

Lacassine Refuge is in south central louisiana, about 20 miles south of Interstate-10@Welsh or Hayes which are about 20 miles east of Lake Charles.
They arent really draining it, it is mostly marshland with boat lanes, some very shallow and some are about 15 feet deep. There are so many fish there it is un-real. we fish them with jigs, anchored off, casting about 20-30 feet from the boat. We went last saturday and caught 88 crappie, 7 bass, and about 15-20 bream. First 2.5 hours, only 3 fish, then they started. Made it worth the wait. here is how the last few trips went, 57 crappie-20bass. 75 crappie,107(let 7 go to stay legal),82 crappie,86 crappie, then last weekend with 88. here is a link to LWR

Great catch. I have not done any sac-a-lait fishing this summer due to the low water in the Basin this year. I have been wanting to fish Laccasine Pool for a long time but just never have gone because I would not know where to even begin looking for fish. Like you said, "First 2.5 hours, only 3 fish, then they started". My problem is I would sit all day waiting for them to start in the wrong spot. Any suggestions on how to fish the area and be somewhat productive with little knowledge of the place? Thanks.

there are boat lanes, thats mostly what it is there, with the exception of Bayou Lacassine (only a part of it is in the Refuge) if you look at the webby i posted the link for, and click on maps and brochures, then on refuge map,we put in at the launch by unit D (where the parking symbol is) and hit the boat lanes til you find a deep section and try there.

Another decent place in this area is on the south side of Lake Misere(refer to map above), there are a few marsh cuts(canals) that kick off of it that produce some healthy fish and in great numbers most of the time. We have a friend of ours that fishes there and he usually fishes about 4 to 5 hours and catches around 75 nice ones.

    Hey Cat

You are tha man!!!!!!!! Looks like some fine quality fish. I never thought about fishing that shallow in deep water. Did you hang your jig under a cork?
Good luck and hope you get more!!!!

yes, using the smallest float we could find, just big enough to keep from sinking. the reason we are using such small floats, is because the water is dark but clear if that makes sense, so using the smaller float keeps the distractions down. I have seen the fish take off with the jig still in the air about 4 feet above the water. so the smaller the better. The clear water is another reason that we are having to cast so far to get em, when you try to get close enough to jig them, they swim away.

    jlaughlin72,

Thanks for the info. Do you think the fishing will be any good there during October? I won't be home till the 1st and might want to give it a try.

First of all very nice catch Jlaughlin72. Have not seen a pile of crappies like that all summer.

I am with crossbayouguy in his interest in fishing that shallow in water that deep. Sounds like a tactic I need to try sometime. I have noticed sometimes the only way to catch um if cast far away from the boat. Maybe I need to pay more attention to spooking the fish next time I go out. I do alot of slow trolling and I guess sometimes that is not the best method seeing as how you basically get on top of the fish when you slow troll.
