    Default West Sandy report

Wife and I got to get away this weekend, left Pleasant View boat ramp about 7:30, water was a little choppy already and the report was for 10 mph winds so we started slow trolling towards the middle of the West Sandy, Water temp was right at 40 degrees and clear. Before we could get 4 rods out we had 2 shorts caught and released, we trolled in 12 to 14 fow with southern pro hot grubs at .4 to .6 mph following the creek channel heading towards the mouth. Favorite colors were Popsicle, TN chad, KY killer and Weiss lake killer. When we came off the lake we had 5 keepers, biggest being 11" and had thrown back probable 80+ shorts (9.5 -9.75"). Also went through some big schools of shad and there were gulls and Loon (6) all around the schools. I know the word is we are going to have some good years ahead but last year this time we were saying this, when are they going to grow up??? Going to be back there New Years weekend, hoping the wind will give us a break so we can get out into Big Sandy and see if that's where the keepers are at.

    Merry Christmas

That sounds exactly the same as how I have been doing out in Big Sandy. Plenty of 9 3/4" short fish spider rigging. I also keep hearing how good it will be next year but it is always the same. Few keepers in many shorts.

My plan is to start fishing the main river more next year. A person I was talking to at the restaurant one morning this week said he caught 56 keepers over three days recently somewhere out in the front of Leatherwood. I didn't ask exactly where even though I would love too know. LOL I may give it a try soon but don't have many spots located out there.

Wife and I were eating breakfast Sunday am and over heard a couple guys talking crappie. I did ask them where the keepers were and they both chimed in "on the main lake ledges". One of them said he side scans looking for schools of bait then works that area of the ledge, he said he very seldom fishes back in West Sandy and Big Sandy. He starts at the power lines out to the main lake channel. I'm going to try at the mouth of big Sandy and the main channel New Years weekend the wind permitting.

    Merry Christmas,

    Merry Christmas,
Make sense what they are saying. May have been the same guy! Power lines are not too far from the mouth of Leatherwood. Problem is finding a day without lots of wind to get out there and be able to make it back. The wind through there can be brutal. I have to put in at Paris Landing and run down there. Probably 8-9 miles. Not a bad distance but the wind makes it feel like 50 miles in my aluminum Ranger RT188C.
