After watching the weather predictions for the rest of the week, I called Rickie and Jere(crp4570) to see if they wanted to do some research and fish a while Wednesday.
I have been wanting to get an idea of how much line would be needed to get jigs of several weights and certain weight swimbaits to certain depths. Rickie will report on that later but we spent a couple of hours doing research that will be shared soon.
Once we decided to get down to business, we broke out the Opti planer boards with PICO cranks. The set-up was 3 boards on each side on 8 foot Pinnacle rods with Shakespeare and Okuma linecounter reels. Rickie and Jere manned the back seats while I drove the boat.
Our first bite was a black crappie on a prototype black PICO. We all agreed that it couldn't be since black crappie won't hit cranks at all, much less in 20 feet of water.
The next hook-up was a real surprise. We thought the Zombie was hung up. As Rickie tried to break it off, he noticed the debris was moving along behind the boat. We figured it was a limb or such. As it got to the back of my Suzuki, they realized it was something much different and terribly surprising---it was a huge snapping turtle!! Granted, I didn't see it so I have to take their word but both said it was as big as the engine cowling!! Once it saw the boat, it decided it had seen all the fun it wanted for one day. It headed for parts unknown, snapped the line, and took one new Zombie pattern PICO crank back to where it called home.
We fished for a few more hours and found a couple of concentrations of crappie that kept the board guys and net guy busy.
We ended up with 15 keepers (no shorts), a green carp about 5 pounds, some nice catfish, and a ton of laughs.

Everything is possible. The impossible just takes longer!
Nice report! and a nice mess of fish.
Congrats on a good day with friends!
That was a good trip. I'd like to have seen that snapping turtle on that table by that green carp. That would have been a cool picture.
Great catch Doug thanks for sharing
Great report and pics
