Default 1000's of dead Asian Carp in Cumberland River

This was posted on Facebook by Paul Rister today.

Thousands, and thousands, and even more, dead Asian Carp below Barkley Dam. The dead fish extend down the Lower Cumberland River to the confluence with the Ohio River. 99.999% of the dead fish are silver carp. Some have been dead a few days, and some are still dying. Although, some lively carp are also jump in the turbine discharge. I would estimate the extent of the fish dying is past. Some dead carp line the shoreline some 10 feet up from the waters edge. These likely left there from recent high water, as the water has now fallen closer to normal pool level.

Since only silver carp were affected, you can rule out water quality issues. You can rule out chemical spills. Basically rule out things that would have typically killed shad (easiest fish to kill) and all other species. The likely cause is a viral infection. It is possible that during the high water, a higher than normal density of silver carp came up the Cumberland River. They all congregated below the dam. With a super high density in a small area, a communicable disease quickly spread. This lead to the the fish kill. To possibly verify this theory, a few live but sick silver carp (fish found swimming lethargically) at the waters surface, where taken to Frankfort this afternoon. These fish will be examined by fish pathologist at Kentucky State University.

We talked to a few anglers fishing in the Tailwaters today (amongst the dead fish)... The report is Striped bass, white bass and catfish are still biting. One boat had 7 nice size striped bass in about two hours.

So the bad news; it really smells like dead fish around Barkley Dam. The good news, a bunch of silver carp have died. Maybe we are on to some type of natural control mechanism.

Be cool if they can figure it out and then use the knowledge.

Sounds like they need to find out how they died and inject the virus in the water!!! That's some good news...carp floating and the good fish biting!!!

When I crossed the river below KY Dam a couple of days ago, it looked like there had been a big kill there also.

That's great news. Would be great if they could figure out some way to kill them in large numbers and not hurt the native fish.

I was below Barkley dam Tuesday..just wasn't sure what I was seeing the dead carp only numbered in the hundreds..there have been some talk about trying to kill a carp genetically I just wonder if this could have been a DNR experiment..???

Hopefully they are all over this. And it leads to something that they can use to control the population.

I heard the snippet of the idea of carp control at the genetic level when it first surfaced a few months ago...

I also wonder if this is a covert conspiracy experiment...

If it kills these beasts that are ruining our fresh water enviroment...I'm all for it...

P.S... I've talked to dozens of crappie fisherguys on the water and in the bait shops the last 2 weeks (I've been on vacation, fishing every day)...and all of them are completely discouraged with low catch numbers...

IMO...these herds of 40lb fish cruising above our crappie is the sole reason no one is catching the numbers of crappie as in the past...

Our comparatively small crappie are scared to death to come out of the brush because these massive beasts are swarming in the thousands right above the crappie's head...

If I were a crappie... I wouldn't come out of the brush either....

Ky and Barkley Lake crappie fishermen (that are seeing low catch rates) ...are going to have to switch to vertical presentations and DIG the crappie out of the brush...

Spoke to one fisherman this week that said his family has been catching the carp by rod and reel. They are actually hitting certain size artificial baits. They take these critters home, fillet and actually eat the fish. But the most important thing I heard was that they are finding bluegill, crappie and bass in the internals of the carp!

They are adapting, they are eating our native species and also attacking artificial baits! We don't stand a chance if something is not done very quickly!!!!

IF that's true, and I'm not saying it isn't ... I'd have that friend show the "evidence" to the KDFWR, ASAP !! If they truly are "evolving" into omnivores, then that may up the ante enough to get funds for more effective eradication programs.
