    Question Spider Rigging a Submarine?

I'm having a tough time waiting for the water to warm up a tad where I feel comfortable getting out in the kayak. I took my fish finder transducer off my 17' aluminum boat yesterday to put it on my Big Game II kayak, so I doubt I'll be going out in it anytime soon in the aluminum boat. I plan on selling the aluminum boat around Spring and just using the kayak as my main fishing ride.

Anyone else having a tough time waiting on warmer water? I know a lot of folks "brave" the ice cold water temps, but without a dry suit I don't think I want to try it. Hypothermia could set in before you had a chance to get back to shore.

Maybe I'll look into a submarine for the Winter fishing. What do you think? :-)

Not sure what part of the country you are from but once you get some seat time in your kayak you will feel more at ease about cold water kayak fishing. Just like anytime while on the water you need to watch what you are doing at all times. I keep a good dry pack with a change of cloths, first ad kit, fire starter and cook stove. Also try to keep your phone in a dry box.
I have not been out on the kayak in a few weeks but it has more to do with muddy lakes than cold. You can have some of the best fishing days of the year in the winter months and I hope you can get on the water sometime soon. It has just become cold here so we have a long while before warm up.

I bought a pair of yaks when Academy Sports opened in Collierville,TN. Each came with a rod holder. When Academy sent me a gift card I added another holder to each. They sent me a gift card after Christmas, I may add a 3rd holder to each.

Some waders would work, so that you could wade out in knee deep water to launch, etc., and be safe. Flipping the yak this time of year is a very bad thing to happen for sure, just have to pick the calmer days, lower volume of boater traffic is a plus as well.
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

I know I'm getting super anxious too. I got my first last summer and only had time to get on the water once with it and that was just a local small pond to get a feel. I'm definitely waiting until it's warmer although once I have my confidence up (both in me and in the yak) I'll brave the cold water. Just not gonna start out in that mode.

Well I was obviously just joking about fishing in a submarine. I'll be fine waiting a tad longer for warmer water temps. I definitely don't want to kayak with my waders. I know too well what happens when you loose your balance and all the air goes to the feet area... You can't stand up without some type of aid.

I did install my transducer and fish finder mount today. I'm pleased with how it turned out. I used the Hobie thru hull wiring kit for a clean install and to hide the extra wires. This and a few other "minor" add-ons will help me wait out the anticipation.

That Big Game II is a pretty stable boat. Put on a pair of knee highs and some rain pants and get after it! Even when it warms up, hypothermia can be an issue. I paddled on March 11 last year and the lake I was on was about 34 degrees and still had some ice in the corners. Do like Stump Hunter said- keep extra clothes, first aid kit, and phone in a dry box.

Yep, take it to a local lake, just paddle, work on turning around to grab stuff behind you, stay close to shore, get comfortable, test the yaks tip point at the ramp, play with it. Get comfy, then go get some fish. I'd not hesitate launching out for a mile or two from shore right now, I love my fishing kayak and know what I can and can't do.
The best way to get to where you want to be in the future is to act like you are there TODAY.

Here is a valuable chart that lists some facts on Hypothermia and Cold Weather. It is worth checking out. "How hypothermia affects most adults"...

    www.pfdma.org/choosing/hypothermia.aspx

This chart doesn't even mention the loss of dexterity that occurs way before exhaustion, unconsciousness nor the involuntary gasp that your body makes when submerged to frigid temps...
