Just a question...Did you preheat your mold or are you having difficulties with it "cold". If you did not preheat you might try
it.Just an idea.Good Luck

For you guys with Jacobsen molds, did you have to drill the throat out? I'm not having very good success with this brand new mold

We do not want to ever overheat a mold as it could warp...I like to set the mold I am going to use on top of my lead pot and rotate about every couple minutes while the lead is melting....I like the mold just warm enough to be a little uncomfortable to load hooks.I use disposable nitrile gloves while working with lead for safety and also for the heat shielding they provide.
Anyway good luck.Another idea is to try heating your lead just a little hotter as a guy should not have to modify a mold to increase gate size.I have modified molds for larger hook size though...

Search for a post by DrNip on this subject. One of the things he talked about was placing the pour spout completely in the pour hole on that mold. I started doing that on my do it molds and it made a big difference.
Thanks Cray, I'll try that next time. I ended up opening the throat up a little, and it works much better now.
Hey Barry,
Just out of curiosity which Jacobsen mold were you having problems with?Just wondering.Glad you found a resolve.

I see that you’ve already gotten it up and running. What ran through my mind was to first, candle the mold. The smoke residue makes all the difference for how the lead flows in some molds. Next was putting the spout into the gate on the mold. Next was lead temp, I run mine hotter than most at 9 or almost there. The Jacobs I’ve encountered were finicky but if run right had no flash. Also had to physically lift the finished jigs from the mold. I attribute this to the shinier finish on a machined mold compared to what I think is a cast mold. Different animals. The smaller gates make snapping the spruce much easier but tricky to pour sometimes.Good luck with it
