    Default First jig

I have talked with quite a bit of you about making jigs and such. Well I broke down today!! I was bored so took a drive to gander mountain and what do you know a fly tying kit! So I figured before I dump a lot of $$$ into something I have never stepped foot in before this is a small investment to see if I may get into this. This is definitely something I can get involved in and enjoy doing it. I can tell this kit is of poor quality and not a lot of options. Actually very limited to colors and such. So I took out a jig head and figured I would give it a go. Here is the final result. Keep in mind the scissors are dull as stated the kit is of cheap material and quality. But I really enjoyed this and will attempt some more after this post. I can see where the finisher will come in handy big fingers with a little jig and half hitch proved to be challenging lolName: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1436666233.901501.jpg

Thanks stump. I just wanted to give it a trial run on a cheap kit before I decide I want to tie. Hopefully this will be a good confident booster while I order some better equipment and materials

I know this one doesn't look great but hopefully I'm on a road to getting better

You are off to a good start. That style of jig is one of my favorite to fish under a float. I have fat fingers to get a whip finisher only a couple of bucks well worth it to me. Also cut your marabou from the stems never cut the natural tips, the tips give the best action. Your doing good keep up the good work.

Lowe, thanks for the tip I was cutting the stems up top and creating a mess. I just read at FAOL to cut at the stem and create a V so I will give this a shot also. Just playing around and am hooked lol ready to upgrade to some better stuff. I will continue to practice with what I have at the moment though. Thanks for the words of encouragement guys

Like the others have said nice jig and you did a good job. This is a very addictive hobby.
I bought a good quality starter kit from Backwoods in Fort Worth. It's made by Terra.

If you don't mind, I'll offer you some suggestions. Get with one of the jig makers on here and order some jig heads to Tie on. 30 bucks worth of jigs in various sizes will keep you tying for a good while.

Go to walmart or Joanne's fabric shop and buy some wool roving and satin material in all colors. I spent 2 bucks at Walmart the other day and have at least a years supply. It takes very little of this material to make a jig like this.

Keep all left over supply in zip lock bags, you'd be surprised what you can tie with it. Don't throw anything away.

Fabric paint is is another good thing to have on hand. It's cheap and has lots of uses for eyes and body material.

craft stores like michael's and hobby lobby can be a valuable resource for cheap tying material.

Google "Allen Hooks" they are good quality hooks at a great price.

    Good luck!!!

You may have to shorten the tail some but that jig will catch fish, BUT - you need to keep your first jig. You will be amazed at how your tying will improve in just a little time at the vise. I still have my first tye and am still very proud of it
