I wouln't cut it now and just bet it catches fish! Always cut to length from the other end. Besides crappie will eat a larger bait than some would think. I mad a marabou jig a few years ago for bass in spring. Back when i guided for a short time all the guides would make sure they had a jig like that especially for after a cold front. Anyway it was a 1/4 oz jig with long marabou and a soft plastic wworm tail on the hook. I first fish in shallow water I caught on that were a couple nice crappie!
