    Default Black Chrome?

I SEE MANY GUYS TALKING ABOUT AND USING BLACK CHROME HOOKS. WHAT MAKES THEM MORE DESIRABLE THAN BRONZE OR GOLD HOOKS?

#1 do not rust like bronze. #2 to me they seem sharper. #3 they do not seem as brittle to me as the Red.

For sure have to be careful with bronze as they will rust easy. As cray said the Black Nickel will hold up much better and for me seem to be a little better hook. The Gold hooks are probably just as good, but if like most Gold hooks they bend easier so that could be a benefit actually if you get hung up a lot. The Black hooks have become my favorite Matuzo Sickle! I say the brand because a friend sent me some of the Eagle Claw little Nasty hooks and I am not impressed at all. To me they are about as sharp as their regular hooks and no where even close to a Matuzo Sickle hook!

Red, gold and bronzed hooks are sharpened before they get the gold, bronzing or red applied. Black chrome is a hard metal and is sharpened after its applied.. The sharpening process does not go thru the plating so rusting is not at issue. While gold is a metal, the plating is very thin and any sharpening done after the plating is applied would remove the gold and cause rusting right away. The temperature needed for gold plating also changes the temper of the steel in those hooks making them very brittle. A red hook with gold under the red will also be a very brittle hook. Black chrome, black nickel...one in the same. Sharp from the get go and only vigorous resharpening will remove the plating and allow them to rust.

Absolutely and I have not needed to sharpen any of them while using them so far and it's been like 10 years I have been using them. Also all hooks are not created equal when they are Matuzo, but I tend to put up with the inconsistence. I see the same hook size being really different wire size from one batch to another and the eye size changes from nice and large opening to pretty small, LOL! I even have seen the barb on the wrong side of the hook, but for the most part they are plenty good for crappie! I like them a lot and see no reason to change! I never buy Red hooks because it always comes off and yes it's just a Gold hook colors in Red!
