Road Kill

I have a few questions how to handle a road kill. I live in the city and come
across a gray squirrel or a coon and maybe a white deer. On the squirrel or
the coon do you chop the rear quarter off and skin the tail out? Or just cut
the tail off? I would like any ideals to the deer. Deer season is in here in Ohio.
How about dyeing? I what to try tieing some jigs this long cold winter. After
I get my jigs poured and painted.

if you're going to pick up roadkill make sure that they are not only the first you can go ahead and skin them out and stretch the hide on the board taken it down with little nails cut the bone out of the tales you could either put borax on them or scrape this much fat is possible off the skin before your dry it sometimes after I skin a animal out if it is too dirty I will worship in soapy dishwater rinse it thoroughly and let it dry out make sure you shake the hideout well and then stretch it on a board you will not have any problems if you are going to get deer tales make sure that you cut the bone out then stretch it out you can put borax on it if you like or just let dry.

First thing I would suggest is check your game laws especially with Deer. Some states have laws against taking game off the Rd without calling Wardens first. Usually I just take my tails and salt the ends real good and put up to dry. Always good ideas to put them in a baggie with some borax to kill any bugs that might be in them.

Worth calling a local taxidermist or game proccesor too, if you have one. When I lived in Austin they would sell deer tails and bits of hide cheap as it was scrap to them.

I just cut the tail of the squirells dip the end in salt and put them in the freezer in a baggie. The rest of the squirrell is too short for me. Be careful with the coon tails, they can have some nasty parasites in there poop that will gladly take you on as their next host. But you can process the tail the same way as the squirell. I normally bone out the deer tails , scrape as much meat and fat off as possible, then salt them down and let them dry. As far as dying them, i use koolaid or Rit dye.

I'm the same in only taking the tails and salting them in a baggie, then freeze em to kill off critters.

Squirrel tails after you cut them off, personnally I would wash them with dawn and then a little hair conditioner. Once they're cured up it's much nicer tying with them. Coon tails, I'd rather buy an artic fox tail then deal with any problems from raccoons.

I never boned out squirrel tails before but got several in a swap box and they are MUCH better to tie with when they split out.
