A steelhead is a sea run fish kinda like a salmon with a few diferences. Oncorhynchus mykiss is the scientific name. It is in the rainbow trout family but is it's own species. The rainbows that are are planted in lkaes for fishing can go to the ocean but are not steelhead. Steelhead also have the ability to return to the ocean, if they are healthy enough. Very few do this but it has been documented here several times. It can also be planted in lakes as both an adult and juvenile. They run in size from about 5 pounds all the way up to 30+. Biggest I ever caught was 18#. Fish fought me for well over 20 minutes on 15# test.

This is my first group of ties. I'll pick the very best from these to send along.



Watched a couple of videos on tying Schlappen feather jigs. I've used Schlappen before, though not in the manner shown in the videos. The west coast guys in the videos are real pros at tying these. Mine look nowhere near as good as theirs. I've got a ways to go with this style.

Taught myself some important points about feather selection and learned how to turn these feathers over the shank from the videos. Not all Schlappen feathers are created equal. Watch out for feathers with twisted plumes. :p

This is turning out to be a very good learning swap for me.

Pup, waint until you try tying in 3 different colors in layers with schlappen, then it really gets interesting. Not much different than hackle just harder at times to get it to all wrap right and not look like a really bad hair day. You palmered them right?

As for your attempt, they will work just fine and would be used by a lot of people here and in Oregon for Steelhead.

The jig heads are Eagle Claw and have relatively light bronze hooks. The hook gap appears to measure to a #2 on a Mustad 3261 Aberdeen hook chart. I really don't know which model of hook was used. It's not a thick, heavy hook. It'll hold an Indiana steelhead though.

Sure did. I found that keeping the "curve" of the feather pointed toward the bend of the hook was challenging at times. A few of my jigs have feather barbs pointing toward the jig's head.

It can be tough but having them point out or even forward isn't always a bad thing. The added action and larger profile can be killer in fast water and early or late in the day.

Finished tying these tonight. Will clear the eyelets tomorrow.



These are tied on 1/8-oz. ball heads with #2 hooks. I believe that I'll call this pattern "citrus drink mix".
