Closed face I can't help with, I use spinning reels, but it's obviously binding up in there and catching. Do you have the right size stop? They come in various thread weights.
Today was my first experience with a slip bobber. Read internet instructions on what I needed to do. Got the bobber stop on the line (yellow one that looks like a cinch knot)
Then, my problem came when I tried to reel in my line. I'm fishin' the trusty old Zebco 33. My bobber stop wouldn't reel in. I had to remove the cover to get it to wind. Then when I tried a practice cast, the line stopped dead at the bobber stop and I had to forcefully pull it out of my reel.
I pulled the strings tight enough for "medium" force to be applied to move it. And fitting through the hole in my reel wasn't the problem. It was hanging up between the casing and the metal spool inside.
Right now, I've just tied a few overhand knots on my line and I'm able to slide it and it stays put. Just don't know how long my overhand knots will hold!
I know this is the "Indiana Crappie Forum" but ya'll have been so helpful with my "crazy-woman" questions in the past, I was hopin' you could give me some input!

that sounds like a tricky problem you are having there. One suggestion is to get a longer rod, that way you wont have to reel the slip float knot all the way into the reel. There are several brands of "Crappie Long Poles" on the market, possibly going with a 8' or 10' rod may solve your problem.
the only other way to solve your problem is to stop reeling before your slip float knot goes into your reel. Another suggestion is try cutting a rubber band and tying a couple of overhand knots on your line, sometimes those will go through spincast reels.
The ultimate way to solve it is to learn to use a spinning reel...LOL!
Good Luck and I hope this helps!

I cannot recommend this product from experience, but I read another forum that suggested these for the Zebco 33. Cabela's -- Rainbow Plastics Gizzmo Bobber Stop Like I said, I personally have not used them but they are worth a shot. I have seen them at Walmart, Meijer ect. Good luck!!
I,ve been useing a thing called speed stop they work really well on my ultra lite but it,s a open face. These things are tiny & made of nylon cost 1.99 per pack. Here,s a web site on the pack you can go to... WWW. STOPPERLURES.COM
Try the bobber stops that are little pieces of rubber. You thread your line through a loop of thin metal and then you slide that rubber thing onto your line. It works pretty good with closed face reels.
I've got a couple of closed face reels and I haven't found any type of bobber stop that won't hang up on the spool or sometimes the pick up pin. Only once in a while does it work right. Heck I even have trouble sometimes on my open face reels. The line gets under the knot and sticks.

Problems I've found with the thread stops are:
1 thread ends left too long
2 Don't use Firewire
3 Make sure it's the same lb test line as your mail line
Try using a rubber bobber stop that matchs the size line your using.

I use ones that look just like the Speed Stops with only one problem. I have to run the line "around" the speed stop between the eyes if I'm using light line, or they slip easily. Don't get the cheapies from Wal Mart that have four holes in them. They break easily.
I've never used one on a closed face reel. All of our stuff is open faced.
