    Default Knop Lake???

Has anyone been to this little lake outside Rossville, just off S.R.26,? I went to try the ice this winter with no luck. It was also my first atempt at ice fishing. I have heard the fishing is good but am looking for some input. Any comments would be great.

I have not crappie fished this lake in 20yrs but it used to be good early in the year(actually had a 2lb 4oz fish that won a contest in Kokomo years ago)actually as soon as the ice came off. This was before the state bought the lake. I have bass fished a couple times in the past few years and have not had very much luck but have not worked very hard either. Actually also had an 8lb 2oz bass but that too was also 20yrs ago so the potential I believe is there.

Our best crappie fishing was down by the dam at what I call the far end(furthest from the overflow) and there was/is a tree top in the corner and that is where bothe the crappie/bass came from.

I have heard(but not tried) that they care catching some in the monom at Shafer and also some at Mississinewa.

Seemed like a lot of typing but not much info for you, sorry.

Created by an earthen dam near Wildcat Creek in 1963, Knop Lake was part of a private campground until the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) gained control of the property in 1980. Fishing regulations on Knop Lake before 1980 was a 12-inch minimum size limit on largemouth bass and six fish. The DFW quickly upped that 12-inch minimum to 14 inches (the standard minimum for the state) and launched a series of studies of the lake from 1981 to 1997. The conclusion of these studies found that the lake offered little fishing opportunity.

Thus, Knop Lake was renovated in the fall of 1998 and restocked with 1,635 largemouth bass, including 20 adults, along with bluegills, redear sunfish and channel catfish.

Few fish were found in the lake in a follow-up survey in 1999, but another check of fish populations in 2000 indicated the renovation was a success, with largemouth bass making up 54 percent of the all species being caught by fishermen. By weight, largemouths made up 53 percent of the sample. Today, bass reproduction and growth rates are excellent, the biologists said.

The Knop Lake Area is on CR 650 south, west of the town of Edna Mills. Kokomo angler Pat Campbell finds the western half of Knop offers the best bass fishing. He also finds surface lures effective.

    Default Knop lake

    JhDavis,
I have fished Kokomo quite a bit for bass and a little for saugers early/late in the year(ice in/ice out)but the crappie fishing is not very good overall. My father told me there was a report this past week in the Kokomo Tribune about some guys catching some crappies from Kokomo though so it may be worth a try? It is shallow/dirty and stumpy, especially past the 1st bridge. If you decide to go there and venture past the 1st bridge be very careful, even in the middle of the lake.

I have heard too that they are catching crappies at Raccoon/Waveland?

    Good luck.
