This may seem abrasive to some, but I wanted to clarify something that happens regularly on this site when it comes to measuring fish. When a conservation officer checks your fish for proper length, he doesn’t measure your fish with the mouth open, not even half open. To be candid, its all the way closed, so it would be fair to assume that it would be the standard of rule between fishermen. I am also the guy who checks the measurements at the ISM events, and I promise you that the fish’s mouth will be pressed up against the bump board “closed” for the official measurement.
I don't participate in the big crappie contest, but I do look forward to see the pics, and I hope that you consider that in the rules and regulations.
I’ve heard of guys getting tickets because they didn’t know that rule exactly (walleye and bass in Indiana), so I thought I’d point that out in case you go out of state to pursue crappie that have size limits, as well.

I like the Golden Rule style measuring devices because it does allow you to make sure that the fish is pushed up against the 0" mark. This is a great point that could save a fella some cash and grief. That fish that you may be trying to stretch, the law officer may be trying to shrink.
Don't think for a second that a fish won't shrink in the livewell...it happens.
Really, they shrink? Or is it our ability to stretch them in our original excitement.

Every fish I lose at the boat is a 15"er!
I will tell you something that happened to me one time, not measure related but happened to me in a tournament one time at Patoka. I caught five fish one being a six pound kicker, the rest being 14 in or so, and toward the end of the day I looked in the livewell and there were only four fish in there the big one ate one of the smaller ones while in there and it was still sticking out of its mouth, I didn't know what to do so I just weighed in the four fish and no I didn't win there were some big fish caught that day. What is the right thing to do since I caught five but actually weighed in four????
