They are there but don't try to fish too deep. The thermocline is at about 12 ft so you have to fish above that. I have been doing best in the 8-10 feet range.
Funny thing is we caught crappies yesterday in 3 feet of water and we also caught them dragging jigs along the bottom in 20-23 feet of water. Any depth we tried we caught fish. The thermocline was at 15-16 feet. Strange year.
Yesterday I caught crappie as well from very shallow to 16-17 feet deep. I tried finding the thermocline but couldn't get anything to show on my finder.
The only one's I've been getting have been about 20 feet.
I use crappie nibbles.
Lately all I can find from shore or the docks are dinks, and those can be anywhere in the water column. So we are taking a bit of a break and fishing carp now for a while and they are cooperating real well. We also do not need to wait until near or after dark for them. In fact, we can fish carp earlier and move to crappie spots as witching hour brings on the dark. So far, however, the crappies haven't been all that cooperative for us around here in Minnesota.
Heck I've caught so few crappies this year that I'm about ready to sign up for the crappie lessons...been a weird year in general. Places that worked last year aren't working this year, and pike have moved into my favorite holes...grrr...I'd rather catch the crappies and gill that used to be there.
Roaming the banks of the Kankakee River and anywhere else fish might lurk.
