The call came in at 11:09 am. A vehicle was reported in the water. The roof and antenna could be seen out of the water about twenty yards out from the dock. There was no more information available.

Upon arrival, I had a chance to speak to a fisherman who was loading out. He said "oh yea, I saw it when I came in at around 7:00 am. " I asked why he didn't call someone then. "Not my problem dude" was his answer. "I was here to fish and left my phone at home." ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?

Is it that bad out there that we can not stop to see if someone is in need of help ? Are we in so much of a hurry to get to a spot that we can not assist in an obvious emergency situation? How in the world can anybody boat past a situation like that.

What really, really disturbs me is that looking at the parking lot, He was not the only fish hungry SOB that left the dock without saying a thing except, "watch out for the truck in the water." I am APPALLED. I just don't know what to say...

Turns out there was no one in the truck. It was reported stolen the night before. Can some one try to explain how grown men can be that selfish, unconcerned and or STUPID

Lots of people in this world, so, the odds are good that there are a fair number of them like that.

I never go fishin' without my cell phone. I reckon more folks carry cell phone than those that don't. How long does it take to report a vehicle in the water? It is a sad comment on some of today's selfish people.

Here is the newspaper (regurgitated) story from today:

Authorities pulled a stolen pickup truck out of Sanchris Lake in Christian County on Sunday. The pickup truck had been reported stolen in Sangamon County before it was found, said Sangamon County Sheriff's Lt. Robert Steil. Fishermen on the lake’s west boat dock noticed the truck in the water about 7 a.m., he said. They saw the tip of the cab and then called authorities. Authorities were able to pull the vehicle out of the water, Steil said. They discovered the keys were still in the ignition and the truck was in drive. It was towed and the owner was notified, Steil said.

    Ya can't fix STUPID!!!
Give a man a fish and feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day!

It may be none of those three things...stupid, unconcerned or selfish. I worked for the State...turned in a bad supervisor...now I have not worked for over three years. (plenty of time to fish, just cannot afford to) You can get yourself in a mess trying to do the right thing. I will think long and hard before I ever act in a non life threatening situatiion. If you think anyone stood up for me in this situation you are right, there were two others...they lost there jobs also. Doing the right thing is not always a good thing for you, financially, physically or mentally. Had I walked away and not did the right thing I would have had enough time in to retire. Lower paid state workers pensions are not that great, it is the big boys that rob the system...the good ole boys net work! I paid the price for doing what was right, if you are not connected in the State with the big boys you are shark bait. Those BIG BOYS all started working on a boat as apprentice baiters...

Continuing as I got logged off once...I am only saying there is another side to every decision. It is hard to judge someone else's decision, they may or may not have a situation in there life that has caused their reactions. I do not know what I would have done, but I would have spent a moment thinking do I really want to get involved. No one dying here, obviously been in the water a while. What do I want to do, my reactions are no longer to jump in to the situatiuon unless it is immediately a life threatening situation.

I think I understand your reservations given your previous experience. However, how would you know nobody was in the truck? There was an incident several years ago where a mother and her boyfriend rolled thier car into Clinton Lake with her two young boys in it and they drowned! You wouldn't know that unless someone was called and they pulled it out. I don't think helping in this case would have any bearing on your job like your instance did.

Other side of the coin is how do I know some one is in the truck and how do I know how long the truck has been submerged. If they are long dead and it is a crime scene I have just disturbed it. If I take them out and the have been dead for hours I have possibly lost unrecoverable evidence. Even if I just call it in, I am now going to be investigated as a suspect, especially if it is a random crime and no obvious suspects come to light. Why did they end the death penalty??? How many people are falsly incarcerated now. Cops want to solve crimes, prosecuters want to prosecute. If you see a fire in the middle of the night and call it in and it is definitely arson, you are automatically a suspect. I am not trying to stop anyone from doing the RIGHT THING just saying I now have seen the other side of the coin and the GOOD SAMARITAN can become the victim. What would I do...I do not know. I just know that I will now think about anything before I get involved IF IT IS NOT AN IMMEDIATLEY LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. I would not have hesitated years ago to do the RIGHT THING without a second thought. My main point is not everyone is one of those three things. I do not want to be judgemental of people. I have had CPR classes many times, I may or may not use it in any given situation. Legally it is my choice! Because a vehicle is in the water and that is all I know about it, I think it is my choice. I do not know of a legal requirement to do anything. It could have been already been reported and a tow truck on the way. Same as if a person puts a car in the ditch and walks down to a farm house and has a farmer pull it out. If a tow truck comes they are legally required to report it and maybe the owner wants to avoid the cops writing a report and possibly a needless ticket on the insurance.

The Clinton thing was a little different. The parents were there on the ramp and you would have know there were children dying in the car. I would have probably been in the water and telling them to drive my car to get help if no phone was available. Each situation is different and I believe that was determined to be a murder.

Judging someone's action or inaction is a slippery slope!
