Cool. Can't believe there is that much difference. I still like looking at those colored images and try to picture a puppy or a bear, like you did when you were a kid and looked up at the clouds. This modern stuff takes all the fun out of it.
The following link provides a few comparative examples of the two units.

A couple of the highlights were as follows:

Sunken Boat with HDS DownScan:
Sunken Boat with Mark 5X DSI:

The Mark 5 obviously has less definition than the HDS DownScan, but interesting for the money. The Elite and Mark units are easy to install.

Thanks for the pictures Talon, Im still banging my head against the wall trying to decide which one of these I want along with my wallet. I have a question about where is the best place one of the HDS units can be monuted on my boat? I have a fish/ski stratos so I know I have no room on the dash and don't know if it is a good place to mount on the side by the throttle area. Where I have one placed now, I don't like where it was put on...thanks to the company that put it on.
Jerry, you had a fish/ski ranger, do you thinks you could have put one of the HDS units somewhere on your boat that wouldn't hinder anything? Thanks and Im hoping to be out today after my interview!!!:D
Not sure where you're best place to mount would be, but I have mine near the throttle on a ram mount. Love the ram mount because you swivel it to reduce the glare and also if you're looking at the map without being in the boat.

I had a ram mount on my dash that ran above and along side my steering wheel, on my other boat. It worked out just fine, unless I was in real rough water, then it would slip down onto the wheel, and I'd have to re-position it.
Here is a link to the Bass Fishing Home Page, electronics forum, that I have been going to for a long time to check out fishing electronics questions. Bass Fishing Home Page Electronics. They have some very interesting discussions and there seems to be factory reps or sales people that hang out there to answer questions.
Sorry about that, the link doesn't show up, I must have to do something different
