Congrats on the beard hen, A friend of mine shot one last year, I guess Hes having it mounted. Those are real trophies!
I was lucky enough to harvest a bearded hen this weekend. It had an 8 inch beard and was really thick. (about 25 strands) The hen weighed in at 9 pounds and 4 ounces. I have only seen one other bearded hen and that was while scouting another area earlier this spring. I have taken several large Toms in the past and was tickled to add this to my trophies.

I still use one rod at a time!!
Being a biology teacher and a hunter, I have done some research on the "bearded hen". It seems that most biologists agree that about 10-15 percent of all Eastern wild turkey hens have some signs of a beard. Most are rather small and very hard to pick out on a live bird. The beard seems to get thicker and longer as the hen gets older just like on a tom. The beard seems to have no effect on the hen's ability to reproduce and hatch eggs. We never get too old to learn about the animals and fish that we chase.
