I was born and raised in Misssissippi and they were never called anything but "white perch"...I didn't even know until I moved to Georgia that there was another fish with that name. I still call them "croppie" now instead of the popular "crappy" the locals use...But whatever you call them, they sure taste great and are a blast to find and catch! :D

Wink Ain't much different than ...

people calling ALL species of Sunfish ... BREAM or BRIM :p (when the true "Bream" is a totally different species, native to England/Europe/Russia :D And it looks more like a White Perch or Shad, than any of our Sunfish )

I was born and raised in KY ... and grew up hearing Crappie being pronounced as "Croppy". Picked up calling them "krappee", from Tenn & Ala locals. NEVER have I referred to them as "White Perch" ... but, what's funny about that particular "name", is that is what I grew up hearing Freshwater Drum called

Dutch is right .... there are a lot of nicknames for Crappie!! And you best learn the local colloquialisms for them, or else you might find yourself fishing for something you ain't got the least bit of interest in catching :o ...LOL!!

I can see the reasoning behind most all of the nicknames that Crappie have ... save one. Strawberry Bass just don't ring no bells, for me  :D
