perhaps you would like to consider an unbiased approach to your decision. I am familiar with the Humminbird 798ci HDSI and a Lowrance HDS 8. I certainly see a big difference in the image quality from one to the other .If you like I will post pictures from both if that will be any help.

look in the electronics forum, for SI subforum, you'll see lots of comments about both brands, pick the one you like, not what someone else likes or prefers
    GO BIG ORANGE !

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

X2 I will hook with you at the same time. HB SI is easy. I have 2 birds and 2 Lowrance. The bird is winner hands down. And the bird is so much more user friendly.

I looked at the link you have whoever did the post for the bird had the sensitivity way to high and also had the contrast setting to high for a quality screen shot. I you would like to compare I'm game. You can check out my earlier threads. Or I will gladly post new ones.

Please compare apples to apples! 798 is less than a grand and HDS 8 runs $1200+! Compare the 898 or 998!

Lowrance will not service their units. If it breaks, you are SOL.

One other thing to consider is the Humminbird SI units use the 2 SI crystals to form the DI image. The DI on SI units is just a added benefit on the unit. If you want to compare DI images you need a dedicated DI unit. Also the 798 si is not capable of 800khs like the 8 9 1100 units are. the 800khs can make a much crisper picture than the 455 khz. personally i dont really care how crisp the picture is i like the 455 for finding fish.I have studied many forums on both units. I think both Lowrance and HB are capable of putting out incredible images. I thinks it's all about what you are used to using and how much you are willing to pay.

Very well put Joe,I have seen lots of screenshots in the last few months including my own that I displayed on my Lowrance vs humminbird thread. It ultimately comes down to what you adapt to and what you want to pay for. It's a healthy comparison though that should spark interest for the fisherman out there prospecting the options and choises and the why or why not go with this one or that one. I went as far as craigs list to see what was selling and was quite surprised at what I found.I still listen for what the fisherman say about their personal expirences with the new electronics. It took some powerful convincing from fellow fisherman for me to make my choice, now I'm about hooked on my unit but am not beyond switching here or there as more tech becomes available. Isn't is wonderful how we now can narrow our search to find fish down to this latest technology so we hopefully can spend more time concentrating on how Quick we can get the net. Quick get the net!!!!!!!!!!
