Default anybody ever changed oil on 4 stroke themself?

Well my 60 hp mercury 4 stroke just turned 100 hrs. And needs a oil change. Seems simple and would prefer to do it myself rather than take it somewhere and be without my my boat for a day or two...and im tight wad. So how hard is it? What kind of oil and where do I get the oil and filter from? Thanks for any input.

Easy as pie. Just like changing the oil on a car. I just use synthetic oil from Walmart or an auto parts store. Don't forget to change the lower unit oil as well.

Richard, it is very easy. When I had my 60HP four stroke I used the Mercury Synthetic and filter. I know it cost more but I bought my oil and filter at the BASS PRO service department.

Would a auto parts store have the filter? Just a long drive to bass pro. (But would be a good excuse )

Richard NAPA auto parts should be able to cross reference the filter for you. You can probably get online and cross it yourself to a fram filter. I use a fram on my little four stroke. I think it is castrol oil that I use when I change it. Don't carry it anywhere and let them mess with it. You can do it yourself and you will know it is done right.

I'd use only FC-W Certification - FC-W tested marine oil for the 4-cycle motors. Of course, if it's an older out of warranty motor, then do as you please. But when considering that the replacement cost is in the $100.00/horse power ballpark a few more dollars per quart for oil is chump change. My motor manual states changing the oil every hundred hours or annually. When my oil gets so dark that I can't see the hatch marks on the stick, I change it and that is around fifty hours. The filter doesn't really matter that much. There are many quality filter on the market. My warranty only recommend using their oil filter but it states specifically that I "MUST" use FC-W oil. Something to think about.

I changed the oil and filter on my 60 hp Merc. a little while back. If you can change the oil in a car, you can change oil in your outboard. I did hook up water to the engine and warmed it up before I did it.
