Deep and clear. Blueback herring is primary forage. If water is up, fish under tips of the laydowns or fish up water.

Lake is full of white bass they school up on top water early and late and can chase them all over with a poping cork and white jig or fly.

Crappie are there but not as plentiful as other lakes. Not many smallmouths anymore either, the spots have interbred with them and have took over. Chatuge is great for spots, white bass, largemouth, bluegill, and lots of big channel cats.It is a beautiful lake
