On my bow I use a monochrome depthfinder which does the job I want it to do. On my console I have a color unit with GPS. Which end of the boat are you buying for, and what are you replacing?

If you do a lot of trolling you will want a finder with GPS. I really like my Lowrance HDS 5 units. If you live near a Bass Pro Shop go there and play around with several makes and models. Danny at BPS in Macon really knows his stuff and is very helpful.

I'd be looking for something with GPS. Switching from a regular depth finder to something with GPS is like going into another "world of fishing". By knowing where you are in relation to creek channels and sturcture will help put WAY more fish into the boat.Thumbs Up

    Good luck in your search.

I really like my HDS 5. It does some really cool things. I think it makes coffee to but I haven't figured it out yet. Wes

If you are gonna run just one unit and don't want a unit with structure scan or side imaging, you may want to look at the Humminbird 858c. I have two on my boat. They are awesome 2d sonar units with gps and two card slots for mapping and recordings. Since you are running one unit, you can get the large RAM mount so you can swivel it around to be seen from the front of the boat or the back. The display is large enough to be seen from a good distance away. Color selections to help you see the screen in any type of lighting (bright sunny, cloudy, or night). There are some good deals out there on these units since alot of anglers are buying the SI/DI. Also, you could get a 700 or 500 series Humminbird, which are also good units, but they have much smaller display screens. With the 700/500 units, you can purchase an extra mount from Humminbird for a few more bucks and some more cables and add a mount up front. I did this with a 717 on a 16' Grumman that I had. Just turn it off, unplug it, and pop it in the other mount and power up.

What ever you do, shop around as much as you can. Try to go with someone that has one of the units you are interested in and see what it really will do. Also, if you have a bass pro near by, go in and use the demo units they have on display. You can change the settings and scroll through the menus on any of the units to get a feel for them before you buy one.

Hope you get one you like soon.
