when fish hits the lure or bait of choice ,the line releases from the release .
It can be fished how ever deep you want it to go with the line straight back from the rigger.

just use a crank bait that runs the depth you want the bat to be . tie a leader with a jug of choice you want to back trebble hook .
retired and now i will always fish
I agree for the crank bait .but this goes straight down to any depth you want .with the bait behind the rigger at your depth .

I guess it was a long winter. gives us too much time to think. never fished for crappie with a down-rigger. hope it works for you.
Simplify things. Use the same weight on the end of your line, with hooks above or below and drop the line down to the desired dept. You will like it much better. If you put your rig out with 6 or 8 roda and get into a mess of fish , you will be one unhappy fisherman. Keep us posted on how your rig works. It might be wonderful.
What you have is the Redi-Rig Releaser which comes in two sizes. I have used them for years for striped bass fishing. I gave them the name of Poor Man's Downrigger years ago when I was showing them in my seminars. I cannot tell you have many hundreds of these things I have sold with many, many repeat customers. The advantage is that you can have the weight many feet from your lure without it causing a problem when you retrieve line. It will release and slide down the line to the swivel allowing you to wind all of the line back through the rod without any problem. They are stainless and made in the USA and best of all---CHEAP. Check them out on my website Redi-Rig Floats and Releasers

That,s an option for the dead of winter crappie fishing but as of current here in GA. not neccessary. The crappie are fixing to move in shallows.
I agree with FoulHook by not over complicating it, just simplify things and add a splitsot or 2 when necessary...
As i see it , if the pro's aint doin it, then then i aint doin it. This aint the first time it's been mentioned here.
