    Cool shellcracker question

I moved here from Iowa, is a shellcracker the same as a red ear sunfish, I caught something that looks more like a small peacock bass, but it had sharp teeth...Shellcracker??

Sounds like an Oscar or Myan Ciclid, if it had a tial spot like a Redfish its an Oscar. The Ciclids have colorful vertical bars like Bluegill but usualy orange to yellow in color. Most comon from about Palm Beach county and south. Both have pointy little finger biters. The Ciclid fights like dump truck for its size, especialy on 4 wt. fly gear. Hope this helps.

Yes a Shellcracker is the same as a Redear Sunfish. Sounds like you caught either an Oscar or Mayan Cichlid though, they both have teeth but are down in South Florida area since it gets too cold for them further north and they can't survive. I agree. Oscars and Mayans are a blast on a little 4wt. fly rod. :D
